What are Jacks?
Jacks are tools of leverage that help lift heavy vehicles in the automobile industry. They may operate using various methods or mechanisms like electricity, mechanical, hybrid, etc., but hydraulic and air power remains time-tested.
The concept of heavy-duty jacks has been around since the ancient Mesopotamian and Egyptian civilizations, but the modern industrial applications are relatively new. With the dawn of the 17th century came people like Simon Stevin, Galileo Galilei, Evangelista Torricelli, Benedetto Castelli, and Blaise Pascal.
A century later, in 1738, Daniel Bernoulli and Leonhard Euler derived the Bernoulli equation and developed a hydraulic turbine. In 1795, Joseph Bramah patented the hydraulic press, used in flush toilets, which was based on Pascal’s principle.
Jack Types- A Categorization 600
Modern jack types are mostly based on Blaise Pascal’s principle, a principle of fluid mechanics or hydrodynamics, which states that when there’s a change in pressure at any point in a confined, incompressible fluid, that change is transmitted throughout the entire fluid without any loss.
Simply put, it means that if you push or squeeze one part of a fluid, the effect propagates to all other parts of the fluid. So hydraulic jacks, as they are called, work because of the transfer of motion through a fluid medium within the cogs of their machine. Based on this principle, the following jack types can be classified-
Military-grade Jacks
These jacks are heavy-duty jacks that are used to load, lift, suspend and lower military-grade trucks or vehicles for the purpose of servicing and maintenance. Usually, they require additional safety accessories like jack stands or chocks for support during the lifting and lowering process. This not only ensures the safety of the vehicle being lifted but also the security of the professionals involved in the lifting process. However, there are a few companies that are building military-grade jacks today that do not require any manual and exhausting hand pumping or additional stands and adapters. You can check them out here.
Floor Jacks
Floor jacks are the oldest type of automotive jacks in the market. It works based on hydraulic systems that consist of a cylinder, a piston, and a pump. Meaning, the cylinder is filled with a fluid, usually oil, and the piston is connected to the object that needs to be lifted. When the pump is activated, the oil is forced through the cylinder, pushing the piston up and lifting the object. Floor jacks can also work on the principle of air bags, as the Stan Design Inc. Scorpion floor jack variants stand proof.
Pit Jacks
The features of pit jacks can best be explained using our Stan Design Inc. Scorpion pit jack models as examples, which are specially designed to fit any pit or ramp application. These are jacks that, as the name suggests, unlike above-ground floor jacks for instance, are lowered inside service pits to service vehicles. Because of their nature of work, they must be durable enough to withstand regular duress and Stan Design Inc. has stood up for just that! Their pit jacks are made from made with high-grade steel and the finest quality components which increases its longevity.
Rolling Bridge Jacks
These jack types are both heavy-duty and military-grade as well as regular. The Stan Design Inc. StanJacks are again a perfect example of this. As these jacks are especially important for operating lift systems, they are prone to malfunction. Stan Design Inc. stands out here as well. Our rolling bridge StanJacks come with two remote-control buttons designed for lifting and lowering respectively. This allows the user to fully control over the jack, as well as the room to take quick preventative actions in case of a breakdown.
Fast Lube Jacks
These are jacks that are your gold mines. Meaning quite simply, these jacks enable you to offer additional services to your customers besides the traditional offerings allowed by jacks, like tire rotation and tire service. According to industry statistics, you can make at least $24,000 per year and generate more revenue and profit for your business. Stan Design Inc. makes it easier for you to invest in these jacks as our fast lube jacks start from as low as $4000 making your profit margin huge. You can choose between hydraulic or air bag models depending on your needs and preferences. Both options provide smooth lifting within seconds without the need for additional support equipment.
