Top Jacks for Off-Road Vehicles: Ensuring Stability on Uneven Ground

Lifting tools for off road trucks or Off-road Vehicles (ORV), not to be confused with sport utility vehicles (SUV), are heavy-duty off-road jacks. A basic Wikipedia search throws up a technical definition of an ORV, also known as an off-highway vehicle (OHV), overland vehicle, or adventure vehicle.

It defines it as a vehicle specifically designed to traverse unpaved roads and ensure stability on uneven ground, such as trails, forest roads, and other low traction surfaces. It also characterizes it as comprising of three main features.

The features are low ground pressure to effectively navigate off the pavement, high ground clearance, and the ability to maintain wheels or track contact on uneven surfaces. Various ORVs achieve this through different methods like large or additional tires, combined with high and compliant suspension or wide tracks and flexible suspension on the road wheels.

Lifting Tools for Off-road Trucks

Owing to the map of construction or anatomical features of these ORVs, they require specialized jacks for their repair and maintenance. Lifting tools for off-road trucks or heavy-duty off-road jacks must be stable jacks for off-road use.

Stability is an important factor in determining the effectiveness of heavy-duty off-road jacks. Based on the terrain the ORV is expected to traverse, these stable jacks for off-road use are determined by the designers and manufacturers.

However, it is obvious that mass production of heavy-duty off-road jacks cannot ensure customizable lifting solutions. That is the reason why we discuss some of the core features that you must look out for before investing in your lifting tools for off-road trucks.

Heavy-duty Off-road Jacks Features

  1. Heavy-Duty Power– You might want a jack for the purpose of changing tires, which are crucial for ORVs, or working on the gearings and engines. This should guide your choice to purchase a variant of a jack based on its method of operation. Based on that criterion, jacks can be classified as mechanical, electrical, hydraulic or pneumatically engineered heavy-duty off-road jacks. Each is anatomically better suited for segments of performance output. For instance, electrical jacks are generally low suited for heavy-duty work, as compared to hydraulic cylinders.
  2. Fine-grade Material– Only purchase jacks with the highest quality materials, so you can ensure that they can stand the wear and tear of lifting for decades to come. This might sound like a no-brainer, but a lot of customers do not enquire about the fineness of the steel used for building steel jacks, which are generally used to build heavy-duty off-road jacks.
  3. Low profile– One of the most in-demand features of stable jacks for off-road use is a low profile or a small footprint. This trait ensures an extended and elevated reach while offering sustained and stable lift and minimal upkeep needs. It also makes sure that the jack is portable enough to be carried around in these kinds of trucks’ minimal storage compartments.
  4. Safety– Safety is of paramount importance when dealing with using ORVs or repairing and maintaining them. Heavy-duty off-road jacks with built-in three stage safety locking mechanism guarantee lifting the entire front or rear of your vehicles without any danger. These engage automatically at different heights, eliminating the need for any extra stands or chocks to secure the vehicle.
  5. High Lift Capacity– An attractive weight lift capacity that makes you forget the hassle of hand pumping, with easy maneuverability, is a supreme trait of top-rated off-road jacks. A high lift capacity is not only a cost-effective feature, in that it offers more loading and lifting at an affordable price. But it also reflects the high-quality build and durability of these heavy-duty off-road jacks.
  6. Wheels and Handles for Control– Finally, the flexibility and convenience of usage of a lifting tool for off-road trucks is determined by the quality of its control systems. Stan Design jacks come fitted with special roller bearing wheels that allow for effortless rolling and maneuvering. They also have convenient pull handles that make it easy to position the jack under the vehicle.

Why Hydraulic Pit Jacks are Essential for Heavy-Duty Truck Maintenance

Hydraulic pit jacks or heavy-duty pit jacks are tools for lifting vehicles off the ground. Along with floor jacks, and other types of truck jacks like bridge jacks, rolling jacks, etc., heavy-duty pit jacks are useful for the full course of lifting, suspending and lowering vehicles for the purpose of servicing and maintenance.

These heavy-duty truck jacks come in a variety of operating mechanisms, like hydraulics, mechanical, electrical, digitized, air motorized, hybrid, among others. These innovative power options will allow you to choose the best fit for your tailored requirements. Cutting-edge technology along with usable and functional design is shaping the automotive landscape today.

There are several reasons why this is so. For starters, customers are demanding more efficiency and effectiveness over any other features that traditional jack manufacturers had been offering for long. Affordable entry price points and safety measures along with enhanced durability are only head starts today.

For the full heavy-duty truck maintenance experience, pit jacks are needed that can save the time and energy of the people using them, and for industry, the companies employing the personnel wielding them. Commercial garages are no longer ready to lose hours over cumbersome lifting, and the risks attached to it.

Hydraulic Pit Jacks and Their Importance for Heavy-Duty Truck Maintenance

Fluid mechanics, or Pascal’s principle, is the foundation for hydraulic pit jack operation. According to the law, any part of a fluid that is pushed or squeezed will also affect the other parts of the fluid.

In essence, it indicates that any pressure change that occurs at any point in a confined, incompressible fluid is transmitted throughout the entire fluid without experiencing any loss. Consequently, the motion that is transferred through a fluid medium inside the machine’s cogs is what makes hydraulic pit jacks function.

The following general components of a hydraulic system of operation—hydraulic oil, reservoir, buffer, or oil tank; main cylinder or ram; release valve, control valve, check valve; lifting arm or pad; hydraulic pump with piston or plunger; and pump lever or handle—will help us comprehend the basic operation of a hydraulic pit jack.

The actual part of the hydraulic pit jack that stores the hydraulic liquid or pump oil when not in use is called the reservoir, buffer, or oil tank. To stop an unintentional oil flow, the control valve remains closed when the hydraulic pit jack is not in use.

The heavy weight or load must be raised by the piston. Usually, the handle or pump lever attached to it can be moved to mechanically activate it. The fluid inside the hydraulic pit jacks’ buffer tank or reservoir experiences pressure buildup from this movement.

The hydraulic pit jacks’ adjacent compartment, which is the reservoir or buffer tank holding the fluid or pump oil, experiences a build-up of pressure when the handle or lever of the pump with piston or plunger is mechanically lowered or raised.

The hydraulic pit jack’s main cylinder, or ram, emerges from the main body with the force needed to lift the load thanks to the pressure that was created and allowed to pass through a check valve.

The oil is transferred from the pump through the check valve and into the main cylinder, or the ram, which emerges from the hydraulic pit jack body, by means of this applied pressure. Ultimately, the release valve generates the necessary lifting force and raises the load by releasing the built-up pressure, allowing the ram to be easily retracted and lowered while carrying a load.

Fast Lube Jacks vs. Rolling Bridge Jacks: Which is Right for Your Garage?

Truck jacks are specialized type of vehicle jacks that are used as heavy-duty lifting jacks, or in other words, to lift, suspend, lower, and service heavy duty military grade trucks, as opposed to regular cars.

Vehicle jacks, like truck jacks, come in handy for more than the singular purpose of lifting. They can be used for seasonal tire rotation, changing a flat tire, making repairs, changing your oil, lube or other car fluids, inspecting for damage, etc.

Fast Lube Jack- What is it?

Fast lube jacks are specialized truck jacks that enable you to generate more revenue and profit for your business of core automotive workshop and garage services. How? Allow us to explain.

According to industry statistics, you can make at least $24,000 per year by offering tire rotation to your customers. These are auxiliary tasks that can be conveniently carried out in commercial garages.

If you have a service garage setup or own an auto repair shop, you can quickly set up a fast lube equipment fix and add vehicle lubrication service to the list of services you offer. This essential yet relatively rare to find service is sure to boost your clientele.

By purchasing high quality fine grade jacks available in the market, starting from as low as $4000, you can make a small yet considerably profitable investment for your business.

Rolling Bridge Jack– What is it?

Rolling bridge jacks, alternatively referred to as bridge jacks or rolling jack lifts, are used for lifting purposes in an established lift system within a service pit area. They can be used in conjunction with other types of jacks or the same ones.

Bridge jacks are the only way a 4-post service lift system can be converted into a fully functioning full-service vehicle lift system. They are often less mechanized and induce less labour in the lifting process.

Each rolling bridge jack can be engaged to lift one full frame or two tires of your car off the ground, meaning two bridge jacks can lift the entire car for full wheel service. With convenient pull handles, that can also be extended for rear axles, rolling bridge jacks are easy to position under the vehicle.

Comparing Fast Lube Jacks vs. Rolling Bridge Jacks

To understand whether a fast lube jacks or rolling bridge jack is right for your garage, you must dive deep into understanding your own requirements.

Whether you own a commercial garage or automotive workshop that caters to a niche clientele or are simply interested in purchasing one for your personal needs should be taken into consideration before making a purchase.

For instance, both fast lube jacks as well as rolling bridge jacks are excellent suitors for commercial garages. However, if you want a jack that can come as first aid for emergency situations like getting a quick oil fix, fast lube jacks should be your companion on road.

To understand this better and help you make an accurate purchase decision, let us tabulate the 3 key uses and features of both the jacks.

Importance of Load Capacity in Jack Selection

The load capacity of different jack types is determined by the amount of weight it is designed to carry. Based on the mode of operation of a jack type, whether mechanical or hydraulic, its load capacity may vary widely.

Usually measured in pounds or kilograms, a typical jack type has a load capacity ranging from 2,000 to 5,000 pounds (about 2267.96 kg), with heavy-duty jack models handling up to 10,000 pounds (about 4535.92 kg) of weight.

The importance of load capacity in selecting a jack type is great because it directly affects the health of the lifting, suspending and lowering process, as well as the safety of the personnel and the vehicle involved.

In other words, if a smaller jack is employed to lift heavy trucks beyond the load capacity of the jack, for instance a generic floor jack or scissor jack, then it is bound to fumble the process and damage your vehicle and may inflict indirect but severe bodily harm to the people nearby.

On the other hand, even using a heavy-duty jack for lifting small cars is not recommended. Even though it might sound like a harmless idea, in our experience such cases reduce the speed of lifting when smaller weights are involved.

Since the jacks have heavier infrastructure for lifting small cars, knee-jerk reactions within the machinery allow sustained injuries on the car being lifted.

Jack Types and Load Capacities

The above discussion paves the way for comparing the most common jack types and their different load capacities.

  1. Floor Jack – These are the most popular jack types used in lifting heavy weights, be it small cars or heavy-duty military-grade trucks. Their load capacities vary according to the type of car they are used to lift. For instance, the Scorpion floor jacks by Stan Design Inc. are built to lift anywhere from 24000 lbs.- 28000 lbs.
  2. Fast Lube Jack – These are manually operated machines that aid in tire servicing like tire rotation, lube servicing etc., transforming your commercial garage into a proper automobile station. For instance, the fast lube jacks by Stan Design Inc. are built to lift anywhere from 6000 lbs.- 9000 lbs.
  3. Rolling Bridge Jack – These jacks allow a special type of lifting, by aiding automobile lift systems found in big garages. These are very costly and are prone to malfunction. For instance, the rolling bridge jacks by Stan Design Inc. are built to lift anywhere from 6000 lbs.- 50000 lbs.
  4. Pit Jack – These tools are jacks specially designed for fitting into service pits of commercial garages or automotive shops. For instance, the pit jacks by Stan Design Inc. are built to lift anywhere from 12000 lbs.- 35000 lbs. Not only that, but they are also built with powerful air motors for lifting in a few seconds.

Calculating Load Requirements

Calculating Load Requirements

Calculating the load capacity for jack types involves understanding the mechanics of the jack and the weight it needs to support. This is the part where it gets technical.

Here is a basic formula to calculate the force required for a jack without considering friction:

F=2πRQp

Where:

  • ( F ) is the effort force at the end of the arm or handle (in lb or N)
  • ( Q ) is the weight or load (in lb or N)
  • ( p ) is the pitch – distance or lead of thread in one turn (in inches or m)
  • ( R ) is the lever-arm radius (in inches or m)

We will not bore you further with information that you need not confuse yourself with. This should be taken into account by manufacturers before they design jack variants for specialized processes.

In fact, this is an important step in distinguishing whether your provider understands your requirements and can furnish you with the right tool or not.

Factors Affecting Load Capacity

There are several common factors that affect the load capacity of all jack types. Below we will discuss 3 of these which are comprehensive enough to be applicable universally.

  1. Mode of Operation – Whether the jack operates on a mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, air motor powered, hybrid, or any other mode greatly affects its load capacity. This happens because some jacks require mechanical hand pumping to lift a particular load while other modern and more efficient lifting systems like hydraulic jacks can lift loads easily within a few seconds with the push of a button or two.
  2. Environmental Factors – Where the jack is placed- that is, its immediate physical environment- before and after its use is extremely important in determining not only its load capacity but also its longevity. A dirty and damp environment will often cause oxidation and lead to corrosion of parts, rendering the tool unsafe to use or worse, virtually ineffective.
  3. Build Material – This determines the load capacity of each jack type, along with other physical attributes like its size and portability. Whether a jack is made of high-grade steel with fine iron bearings or regular plastic material determines how much load it can lift. Also, a bigger jack can lift heavier loads and vice versa.

How to Properly Maintain and Store Your Truck Jacks

Trust us when we say this, you do not want to mess with the storage and maintenance of your heavy-duty jacks such as military grade truck jacks. Or, for that matter, even your regular car jacks.

The correct and safe usage of car jacks is an essential and fundamental life skill that every driver should possess. And with the need for usage comes the responsibility of maintaining and storing them correctly.

It is a common perception that heavy-duty jacks or military-grade jacks lose their vigor over time. What does that mean? To solve the problem we need to break it down into small tangible chunks.

Simply put, ‘losing vigor’ in the context of jacks can mean anything from physically breaking down (including malfunction of constituent parts and units) to mechanically shutting off (for instance hydraulic fluids drying up in hydraulic jack systems).

Or, from operating inefficiently (like lifting or lowering slower than it used to) or degrading in quality (due to rust or corrosion) to hindering productivity or becoming unsafe or outdated for continued usage, to name a few among other things.

And well sure, most of these issues are bound to happen over a considerable period of time after sufficient usage, they can still be effectively handled to be postponed by enhancing their longevity simply by storing and maintaining their carefully.

After all, jacks like heavy duty jacks or military grade jacks are essential tools for the maintenance of the long-term operational health of your vehicle, as well as your emergency aid for quick and cheap automotive fixes.

However, it is no rocket science, everyone can do it with a little patience and our guide. Happy learning!

Checklist For Regular Inspections – Common Mistakes to Avoid

The first step to maintain truck jacks properly is to create a robust checklist for regular inspections, as it would not only help you easily avoid common mistakes associated with the process, but also save you time and money in the long run.

Read our comprehensive checklist for avoiding the top 3 mistakes people make while using and maintaining jacks. Feel free to refer to it for getting started.

  1. Prevention is cure. That is why choosing the right jack for your vehicle tops our list. If your jack is compatible- its weightlifting capacity, its portability and size, its profile, etc.- with your vehicle then it automatically lowers the possibility of injuring itself, your car, or the person wielding it (including yourself).
  2. Knowing its type. Understanding the method of operation of your jack- that is, whether it is a hydraulic jack or an air bag jack, for instance – will enable you to know where and what to look at for inspecting its health. For instance, hydraulic fluids naturally run out after continued usage, needing refills without which the jacks refuse to function properly. So, keeping it in check can take care of that issue.
  3. Keeping a lookout for dents or broken parts on and of your jack. This is a clear giveaway that your jack is set to malfunction sooner rather than later and you might want to get it fixed before it hurts you- something most people tend to ignore, ultimately paying dearly for it in times of distress.

5 Easy Steps to Maintain, Clean, and Lubricate your Jack

There is no easy way of putting it but the longevity of jacks- be it heavy duty jacks, military grade jacks, regular bottle or floor jacks, scissor or pit jacks, or any other variant- solely depend on your quality of storage and maintenance.

Also Read: Streamlining Oil Change Operations

So, here are 5 easy steps to maintain, clean, and lubricate your Jack. We will cover their proper storage techniques and ideal storage conditions in the following section before ending this blog.

  1. Set up a maintenance routine to keep inspections regular without forgetting about it. Even though jacks rarely demand any attention, meaning you can inspect them twice or thrice a year, but please keep an eye out for unusual issues and do not hesitate to consult professionals as not all repairs are DIY (do it yourself) friendly.
  2. Release pressure before putting away the jack. Bleed the cylinders regularly before storage when the jack seems to strain in lifting and supporting loads. Not only does releasing the pressure make the tool more compact and easier to store, but it also releases stress on the system that can contribute to the deterioration of various components, enhancing its overall performance.
  3. Use a damp cloth to clean the dirt before it settles and gets sticky. Grease, the numero uno lubricant for most jacks, tends to attract a lot of dirt because of its texture and character. Settled dust and the moisture from the grease can lead to the deterioration, rusting and clogging within mechanical and structural components.
  4. Use quality oil, grease, or hydraulic fluid to lubricate your jack as and when necessary. This will reduce unnecessary friction which leads to premature wear and tear within the mechanical and structural components of jacks. It is a contributing factor in ensuring the long-term health of your jack. Regularly inspect for oil levels (in hydraulic jacks) and refill it accordingly.
  5. Keep the cylinders dry and out of water. You should make every effort to ensure that water does not get into the system and mix with oil. In the unfortunate event that the water mixes with oil the floor jack tends to become useless as far as the lifting capacity goes.

Storage – Proper Techniques and Ideal Conditions

Perhaps, the easiest trick to solve in the puzzle of maintaining your precious little tool’s efficacy is the storage.

Just store it in a clean and dry area, away from sunlight or moisture and you are good to go!

This will not only help prevent rusting of essential components, but also save you the pain of losing a fine tool because of the smallest oxidation deterioration as it renders them completely useless.

Also, remember to store your jacks upright to prevent oil leaks, and follow the above instructions carefully and refrain from using low-quality products since they may end up destroying the overall functionality of the jack

The Role of Hydraulic Jacks in Emergency Vehicle Maintenance

Whether you plan to hit the country road or take a short trip to the beachside, whether it is sunny or there is a forecast of rain, you must always be ready with a kit for the emergency maintenance of vehicles. And hydraulic jacks are an indispensable constituent component of the kit.

Why Hydraulic Jacks?

Hydraulic jacks work using the principle of Pascal’s law of fluid mechanics. Broken down, it means that when there’s an increase in pressure at any point in a confined incompressible fluid, that pressure change is transmitted throughout the entire fluid.

In other words, any change in pressure applied to a fluid in a closed system is transmitted undiminished to all parts of the fluid and the container walls. When this principle is applied in hydraulic jacks today, it helps eliminate manual labour. Here is how.

How Do Hydraulic Jacks Work?

To understand simply the workings of a hydraulic jack, let us consider the example of a hydraulic system of operation, consisting of the following broad components:

  • hydraulic oil,
  • reservoir or buffer or oil tank,
  • main cylinder or ram,
  • release valve,
  • control valve,
  • check valve,
  • lifting arm or pad,
  • hydraulic pump with piston or plunger, and
  • pump lever or handle.

The reservoir or buffer or oil tank is the physical compartment of the hydraulic jack that holds the hydraulic liquid or pump oil together when it is not in use. The control valve stays in a closed position when the hydraulic jack is not in use to prevent the accidental flow of oil.

The piston is responsible for lifting the heavy load or weight. It is usually mechanically activated by shifting the positions of the handle or pump lever attached to it. This movement builds up pressure in the hydraulic fluid contained inside the reservoir or buffer tank of the hydraulic jacks.

When the handle or lever of the hydraulic pump with piston or plunger is mechanically lowered or raised, it activates force and builds up pressure in the adjoining compartment, i.e., the reservoir or buffer tank containing the hydraulic fluid or pump’s oil, inside hydraulic jacks.

The pressure created allows the fluid to move through a check valve into the ram or main cylinder, which then pops out of the main body of the hydraulic jack creating the force required to lift the load.

This applied pressure is what transfers the oil from the pump through the check valve and into the main cylinder or the ram, which extends out of the hydraulic jack body. Finally, the release valve relieves the built pressure for easy retraction and lowering of the ram with the load on it, creating the required lifting force and lifting the load.

Fast Lube Specialized Oil Handling Solutions for Garages in 2024

What are the benefits of a fast lube system? In order to understand that we need to clarify what we mean by a fast lube. And no, it is not what you think. The context is automotive workshops and commercial garages.

A fast lube service is fundamentally a specialized oil handling solution offered by commercial garages and automotive workshops to keep your vehicle’s lubrication system operative.

However, faulty or unsupervised fast lube systems can disrupt your vehicle’s performance. In fact, if technicians attempted to perform a quick oil change without using a proper fast lube system, they may accidentally injure themselves.

At commercial garages, proper oil change procedures and specialized oil handling solutions are a less-than-common sight. And the ones that exist are less than effective. Below we will cover some of the main risks related to this.

Risks Associated with Oil Changes:

  1. Oil Leak – The most common risk associated with oil changes in fast lube systems is the risk of oil leakage going undiagnosed and thus unprevented. This can not only dirty the floor but also make the environment unhygienic and accident prone. Personnel involved in it may trip and fall, causing harm to themselves as well as heavy and expensive machinery usually kept in close proximity.
  2. Lubricant Contamination – This can arise from both internal and external factors, accelerating the wear and tear rate dramatically, because abrasive wear can cause a chain reaction in lubricated machinery.
  3. Dirty Oil Filter – This can be avoided by implementing preventative measures, but during a fast lube service, this can go unnoticed if the right fast lube equipment is not used. Which can further lead to increased engine wear, reduced lubrication, reduced engine performance, sludge formation, clogged oil passages, and a range of other problems.
  4. Personnel Accidents – In a busy automotive repair shop, a technician attempted to perform a quick oil change without using a proper fast lube system. Due to the haste, the technician accidentally spilled hot oil on themselves, resulting in burns and injuries. This is not an uncommon story and can happen to you too.
